On 29 November ANCLAS joined the Director of the ANU Centre for Entrepreneurial Agri-Technology, Professor Owen Atkin, in a series of presentations to the fifteen Latin American Embassies on the potential for collaboration with partners in their countries in the field of agri-technology. The event included presentations by academics and researchers from the Research School of Biology, the School of Computer Science, the School of Engineering, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, ARC Training Centres for Biosecurity and Future Crops Development and Gondwana Genomics.

Latin America represents 15 percent of the earth’s surface and generates 33 percent of its water. This makes the region a significant global reserve of arable land and forests – and, like Australia, a leading exporter of agricultural products. On the other hand agriculture consumes 75 percent of the region’s water resources and is responsible for 50 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions. This means that agricultural producers are constantly seeking ways to improve operations to meet biological, environmental and economic challenges, on the one hand, yet maximize the opportunities provided by ever increasing demand on the other.

For both Australia and Latin America advances in agri-technology can help provide the means to help address the challenges and harness the opportunities. It makes absolute sense, therefore, for entities like CEAT to reach out and, where possible, collaborate more closely with counterparts in Latin America to meet those common objectives.
