The Foundation provides a focus for those interested in Latin America to nurture and encourage the teaching and research of a diverse array of topics concerning Latin America and Australia. Established under the umbrella of the Endowment for Excellence of The Australian National University, donations to the foundation can be used in a range of projects designed to encourage the best from the students and staff of the Centre. These include:

  • scholarships and prizes
  • endowment for key teaching and research posts

  • supporting students to undertake internships in Latin America with Australian embassies and companies working in the region
  • local cultural events involving visitors and local groups to show case Latin American culture in Australia

Your gift can make a real difference. Your gift or endowment could be untied, or you can nominate a specific purpose. If you have a specific purpose in mind, we encourage you to contact us to discuss it so that we can be certain we are faithful to your objectives.

Bernard Wheelahan Latin American Scholarship

Beginning in 2012, the Australian National University has initiated a Bachelor of Latin American Studies degree. This is the first and the only degree in Latin American Studies at an Australian university. It represents a significant aspect of the developing relationship between Australia and Latin America, our expectation that this relationship will continue to grow in importance, and the ANU’s determination to contribute to that relationship. As part of this degree, students are required to study at a Latin American university for one semester. Through the generosity of Pacific-Hydro Pty Ltd a scholarship has been established in perpetuity to help students meet the costs of doing so.

Mr Bernard Wheelahan chaired the Council on Australia-Latin America Relations from its inception in 2001 until 2010. He has had extensive business experience in Latin America and has been a major force in strengthening ties between Australia and the region.
